Ankle Fractures

Dr. Kohring treats all fractures below the knee. There are many types of fractures that occur around the ankle. The different types of fractures are based on where the breaks (or fractures) are located and the mechanism of the injury that causes the fracture. Not all ankle fractures require surgery. Dr. Kohring has extensive training in lower extremity and ankle fracture treatments and surgery. As a fellowship-trained, board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, her experience comes from advanced training during her residency and fellowship in the management and treatment of these complicated injuries. 

During your office visit, Dr. Kohring will review your radiographs and discuss the best treatment option for your injury. For certain fractures, surgery may be indicated. The basic reasons for surgery include:

• Realignment of fractures to restore normal anatomy/position of the bones
• Decreased risk of arthritis later in life
• Oftentimes, a quicker return to walking and work

Surgery for fractures requires making incisions in the skin, putting the fractures back into place, and placing metal plates and screws into the bones to hold the fractures in a reduced position. The majority of patients elect to keep their hardware in forever.

All surgeries have benefits and risks, Dr. Kohring will discuss these with you during your office visit. The final decision for surgery is up to you, Dr. Kohring will assist in answering questions and supporting your decision.
